Legal representation

At the centre, we may refer you to legal representation services.

The Legal Services Society will pay for a lawyer to represent you in court if your legal problem is covered by the legal aid rules and you meet the financial guidelines. At the centre, you can apply for a legal aid lawyer for emergency and other serious family problems. If your child has been removed, or may be removed, by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, you can apply at the centre for a legal aid lawyer for these child protection matters.

To apply for legal aid in other areas that are covered by the legal aid rules, see How to apply for legal aid on the Legal Services Society website. If you don't qualify for legal aid, or your issue is not covered, we will do our best to clarify your problem and refer you to other services.

There are community agencies who provide legal advice and representation, such as the Community Legal Assistance Society (CLAS).

For civil law matters, we may direct you to the Lawyer Referral Service (call no charge 1-800-663-1919) of the Canadian Bar Association. This service can give you the name of a private lawyer who you can talk to for half an hour for $25, plus taxes.
